Treasury Sanctions Sudan Leader for Weapons Acquisition

Officials state he was organizing weapons deals for armed forces.

The Treasury Department sanctioned Sudan leader Mirghani Idris Suleiman last week, addressing his role in procuring weapons for the Sudanese Armed Forces. Since the United States imposed a number of sanctions against the Sudanese Armed Forces, Idris Suleiman used his role as Director General of Defense Industries System to purchase drones from Iran and military equipment from Russia, expanding the ongoing war with more weapons and violence.

“Today’s action underscores the essential role that key individuals like Mirghani Idris Suleiman have played in procuring weapons, perpetuating violence, and prolonging the fighting in Sudan,” said Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley Smith. “The United States is committed to disrupting the ability of both sides in this conflict to procure weapons and external financing that undermine the possibility of a peaceful resolution.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Acting Under Secretary Smith as he oversees the Treasury’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence.
  • For wisdom for Treasury Department officials as they assess the imposition of sanctions.
